The CEO’s Role as Chief Cultural Officer
There two key roles for any CEO – setting strategic direction, and creating the right culture and TEAM environment. In Lance’s view, the second of these is actually the most important as it creates the foundation for success. In the famous words of Peter Drucker – “culture eats strategy for breakfast”. In this presentation, Lance, who won the Supportive CEO of the Year Award at this year’s NZ HR Awards, will share his personal insights on the critical success factors for creating a highly collaborate and constructive culture, and the key role that the CEO and other senior leaders play in defining and maintaining a strong organisational culture.
Lance has been CEO of Cigna Life Insurance since early 2014. During that time he has led a focus on cultural change within the organisation that was recognised with the receipt of the Supportive CEO of the Year Award at this year’s HRINZ Awards. Prior to Cigna, Lance was CEO of Loyalty New Zealand (the company that runs the Fly Buys programme) which he joined in 2008 after a successful career in the advertising industry. During his time in the ad industry Lance was the Managing Director of direct marketing agencies Rapp Collins and Aim Proximity, and also set up his own marketing consultancy which specialised in relationship marketing. A passionate Wellingtonian, where he has spent most of his school, university and working life, Lance is also a Francophile having taken a year off between his Loyalty NZ and Cigna roles to live with his family for a year in the South of France.
